3 v 3 - U4 to U5
The purpose of a 3v3 game is to give 3- and 4-year-olds more time and space with the ball. This allows more chances to touch the ball, dribble, shoot, score, and to have more fun!
It also increases confidence - an essential concept for future development.
At this age, the position of the players on the field should promote a basic awareness of themselves on the field. While 3v3 games at the U4-U5 age groups remain focused on 1v1s with short, repetitive moves, players may gradually begin to learn that passes to a teammate are an option. Play at this age will look messy, but coaches should be patient.
3 v 3 - U6 to U7
At this age, the position of the players on the field should promote cooperation and prepare them for 4v4 games at U8-U9, as well as games with a goalkeeper later on.
At the start of a game, the three players should not stand in a horizontal line – they should have a triangle formation. This triangle lineup is intended to give them a basic awareness of proper positioning and to create a clear intention of playing as a team.
While 3v3 games at the U6-U7 level remain focused on 1v1s with short, repetitive moves, players will gradually begin to learn that passes to a teammate are an option. The triangle positioning is an ideal introduction to the idea of teamwork, which the players will eventually grow to understand.
4 v 4 - U8 - U9
The field dimensions do not change from 3v3 at the U6- U7 level, so why move to 4v4? The answer lies in the player’s ability to move, which becomes easier at 7 and 8 years old compared to 5 or 6 years old. This development reduces the amount of time and space and requires players to make decisions quicker, which will translate well when they move into larger games (e.g., 7v7, 9v9, and 11v11).
A recommended formation in 4v4 is a diamond shape. Thanks to the creation of three lines (1-2-1) which form two triangles, this allows for players to work together - and therefore more passes. Triangles and diamonds are at the heart of any team game to ensure success in teammates working together.
The other benefit of 1-2-1 (diamond) positioning is that it introduces children to the principles of offensive and defensive shape. Of course, it is too early to assume players this age will always stay in their positions during a game, but the 1-2-1 formation will give them some initial ideas in knowing every player must attack and defend.
